Memo PhySci Grade 10 November Paper 2

Q7.4.1
Remember that a hypothesis does not need to state the correct relationship (as in the memo) between the dependent and independent variables to earn the mark(s). An answer such as the following may earn the two marks: "The conductivity of the silver nitrate solution decreases with an increase in the concentration of the silver nitrate solution at a constant temperature." The two marks may be awarded because of:
  • The correct dependent and independent variables are given.
  • The correct controlled variable is given.
  • A relationship (not necessarily correct) is given.

Q6.3
Typing error in option two of memorandum.

Memo PhySci Grade 10 November Paper 1

Total of paper
Questions 4.2.1 and 4.2.2 count four marks each according to the memorandum, instead of the three marks each reflected in the question paper. Free State will not mark question 11.4 (three marks). Due to this, the total of the paper must be marked out of 149.

PATs of grade 11

It seems as if the PATs (practical assessment tasks) of grade 11 went off quite well this year. Building the self-propelled car was quite adventurous and very nice cars were built. I believe the investigation part of the PAT has gone equally well.

Previous articles on the PATs of 2017 are available here and here if you want to read it.

For the grade 11 PATs of 2017, we conclude with a few more pictures and videos that were received. Thanks to the teachers and learners who made a success of this.

PAT projects for grade 11 in technical sciences

The grade 11 learners are currently busy with the project part of their PATs (practical assessment tasks). For this, they have to build a car from cheap, readily available material that uses only elastic potential energy to propel the car. The idea is based on what is commonly known as a mousetrap car, but learners have the freedom to design their own. Apart from designing and building the car, a small scientific investigation must also be done by using the car. Best wishes to our future engineers! Here are a few examples:
