TABSA Workshop for Free State Teachers Part 1

From today, 17 July 2017, to the 21st of July, 100 physical science and 100 mathematics teachers of the Free State have the opportunity to attend a TABSA workshop.

TABSA stands for Teachers Across Borders South Africa. It is a volunteer professional development project for mathematics, science and technology teachers and sponsored by the Punahou School in Hawai, USA and the Cassim Peer Trust in South Africa.

TABSA facilitators will share content, methodology and pedagogy with our teachers, and the approach will be to show teachers how to teach with minimal resources and still be effective.

Travelling and accommodation (dinner, bed and breakfast) are paid for by the Free State Department of Education. Teachers are staying at Oranje Primary and the workshop takes place at Tsoseletso High School in Mangaung.

Arrival on Sunday, 16 July, entertainment and time to rest.

There is a lot of musical talent among our physical science teachers!

Training for technical sciences teachers: June 2017

From 28 to 30 June 2017 the teachers responsible for technical sciences in grade 11 in the Free State have met in Bloemfontein for a training session on thermodynamics. This training was a continuation of the training held at the end of 2016.

This training on thermodynamics is accredited by SACE and teachers receive 15 professional points (CPTD) for completing all aspects of the training.

Cluster moderation of the June examination scripts, feedback on examination papers and the design of the practical assessment task's project were also done while the teachers were together.

Thanks to everybody who attended! We trust everybody is capacitated to teach this topic with success next term.

Here the teachers are busy with an experiment to determine the specific heat capacity of copper.

Teachers who are going to teach Technical Sciences in 2016 have attended their CAPS training from 5 to 8 October 2016 in Bloemfontein.

This subject will be phased in from 2016 in grade 10 in technical and comprehensive schools. The training was done by a group of the Free State Physical Science Subject Advisers, Miss Janetta Nel (CES for Science and Technology) and Dr Angela Stott.

Powerpoint presentations
MS Word documents
Bear in mind that some of the questions in the activities were done for stimulation, and they are not applicable to learners.
Pictures of the teachers during training

During the training we once again came under the impression of the wonderful opportunity we have as physical and technical science teachers to expose learners to the wonders of science. A few teachers requested the piece that was used one morning for the opening. Hence, here it is:

Precious Father, thank You for allowing us to benefit from the beauty of all that Your hand has created. Thank You for our seas, forests, and skies. Thank You for all the beautiful and fragrant plants, and for the power and wonder of every animal. Thank You for the seasons and the rains that keep our earth reproducing. We will wake the dawn with our song. O Lord, our Lord, Your majestic Name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens. When we look at the night sky and see the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars you set in place; what are mortals that You should think about them, human beings that You should care for them? The highest heavens and the earth and everything in it all belong to You. We are blessed to be the recipients of all the beauty that surrounds us and testifies of Your awesome glory.
