DBE has released this year's PATs for Technical Sciences. Please note that it differs from what was communicated in the Recovery ATPs, which is now part of the 2021 FSAG.
This site is maintained by Henry Welman, former provincial manager (2017-2022) and subject adviser (2001-2016) for physical and technical sciences in the Free State, South Africa. Currently retired, but interested in the well-being of teachers and learners involved in these subjects. Please read the disclaimer at the bottom of the posts.

PATs of grade 11
It seems as if the PATs (practical assessment tasks) of grade 11 went off quite well this year. Building the self-propelled car was quite adventurous and very nice cars were built. I believe the investigation part of the PAT has gone equally well.
Previous articles on the PATs of 2017 are available here and here if you want to read it.
For the grade 11 PATs of 2017, we conclude with a few more pictures and videos that were received. Thanks to the teachers and learners who made a success of this.
Here are a few short videos to download.

Here is the first news of the investigation learners do for their PAT projects.
Here a learner is busy with an investigation of the relationship between weight and distance travelled.

PAT projects for grade 11 in technical sciences
The grade 11 learners are currently busy with the project part of their PATs (practical assessment tasks). For this, they have to build a car from cheap, readily available material that uses only elastic potential energy to propel the car. The idea is based on what is commonly known as a mousetrap car, but learners have the freedom to design their own. Apart from designing and building the car, a small scientific investigation must also be done by using the car. Best wishes to our future engineers! Here are a few examples:
