Siyavula support

Siyavula has an amazing website and support system for learners and teachers.

The correct content is provided, and a very advanced question-generating system can help you to practise your solutions. Use this opportunity to help you to stay up to date during the lockdown period.

Note the following: Following President Ramaphosa's announcement about the closure of schools, Siyavula announced that their website is OPEN AND FREE for all individual learners over this period. All high school learners in South Africa can practise physical sciences and mathematics on www.siyavula.com free of charge. Learners who have accounts will have access to Siyavula, and those who haven't yet created an account can do so to gain access. While schools are closed, learning doesn't have to stop!"

Further good news: It is zero-rated in terms of data costs if you access Siyavula via Vodacom, MTN and Telkom.

DBE, Siyavula and Sasol Inzalo Online Diagnostic Assessments

DBE, in partnership with Siyavula and the Sasol Inzalo Foundation, has developed an online platform for teacher diagnostic assessments in physical sciences (grades 10 to 12).

We have previously invited Free State teachers to take part in this, but now there is another opportunity to take part. Click here to read the circular from the DG of DBE, Mr H M Mweli, and click here to read the circular from the FSDE.

From these circulars you will see that:
  • The assessments are focused on grade 10, 11 and 12 teachers.
  • No data is needed for Vodacom and MTN subscribers.
  • You can earn SACE professional development points (PDPs).
  • The Free State has a target to reach until end of March 2019 and again for the end of March 2020.

What to do now?
  • Siyavula has asked for the contact details of all grade 10 to 12 physical science teachers.
  • They will contact you by sms to enrol in the programme.
  • Please use this opportunity for self-development as soon as you hear from Siyavula; it might even happen during the holidays. Best wishes and enjoy the experience!

Megan Beckett

Megan Beckett followed with The Science of Learning: Bridging Learning Research and Teaching Practice.

Spencer Wheaton

Dr Spencer Wheaton spoke on Faraday to Einstein: Two Extraordinary Scientists and Some Challenging Physics.

Adam Reynolds

Adam Reynolds and Megan Beckett ran the last two workshops on Physics Cartography: Mapping Concepts and Charting Routes Through a Sea of Formulae

Colleen Henning

The day ended with Dr Mark Horner and Dr Colleen Henning, HOD of the Science Department at St John's College, on Professional Development Strategies.

Our thanks to the Free State Department of Education and Miss Janetta Nel, CES of Science and Technology, for making it possible for Subject Advisers to attend the conference.
