Memo discussions: March 2015

Additions and/or corrections to the March 2015 memoranda are available here.

Grade 11 Control Test: Q2.2

A scale drawing is asked, but the memo does not have a scale drawing. It is just an example of what it should look like. Learners must construct a scale drawing and you must assess the correctness of it by measuring angles, lengths, etc. A transparency with the construction or a cardboard stencil is helpful to check whether a construction is done correctly.

Grade 12 Control Test

Q6.3

The first mark is given if the homologous series is correctly identified. If not, zero out of two. So, this mark is given by looking at the right hand side of the IUPAC name.
The second mark is given for everything to the left of what the first mark was given for.

Example for 6.3.1
First mark given for “ol”, because an alcohol was correctly identified.
Second mark for “ethan”.

Example 6.3.2
First mark given for “ane”, becasue an alkane was correctly identified.
Second mark for everything to the left of the “ane”, which is “1,2,4-tribromo-3-ethylpent”.

Q2.3
If the "system method" is used, penalise learners with two marks (we want to discourage them to use this method). The mark allocation is as follows:

Q4.2
Answer is "greater". (The rocket starts from zero at the bottom of the well.)
