Comments on the grade 11 chemistry paper (P2)

  1. In our cluster we assumed negative marking at 3.3; 3.4 & 3.6?
Then we have a VERY BIG PROBLEM with marking the graph - according to the national memo, a learner can get 4/4 for the graph with total wrong scaling on the y-axis (and in essence thus an incorrect graph and "points plotted correctly" was MANIPULATED into plotted correctly) - according to this memo though, the marks must be awarded ...
Then - can we mark positively 6.2 to 6.3 to 6.4? It only seems fair?
Personally I feel the memo on 8.3.3 was done in an improper manner - that aside.
In Lejweleputswa we followed the Exam guidelines and completed gold and iron ... I do not understand why the "Free State" should exclude Question 10?

    1. Negative marking at 3.3, 3.4, and 3.6 is 100% correct.
Graph- wrong scale will result in incorrect plotting losing 2 marks thus 2 out of 4. it will also result at in most probable losing 4.1.3 (1 mark)
      6.2, 6.3, 6.4 is not marked positively.
6.2 one mark on formula, one mark on 84 and then answer one mark
6.3 formula one mark, substituting (and calculating moles in excess) even wrong previous answers 1 mark but will then loose the 1 mark for the answer.
To summarize then: Yes positive marking for substituting wrong values correctly but still losing the mark for the answer.

    2. Allocating a mark on substituting a "wrong previous answer" according to my marking criteria is positive marking between sub questions? Thank you for the response

    3. We've seen examples were wrong scale does not lead to uncorrect plotting. The learner simply start the scaling of the y-axis from 100 and not from zero. Thus, incorrect scaling, correct plotting. I agree that marks further on is forfeited, yes.

    5. Actually - another colleague brought it to my attention now ... marking criteria for marking positive between sub questions should have been followed at question 6.

  2. Colleagues, there is something heavy on my heart this morning - and I know this might not be the platform, but if not here, then where? The whole issue of Question 10 being omitted ... done and dusted I accept that. But what are we busy with? Are we educating our learners, or are we chasing / manipulating statistics?
The pressure is immense on us as teachers and on the learners, that is true. But don't you think National should become aware of that? By excluding topics I feel we are robbing learners from opportunities they should have had - and to me it does not seem right. I am also aware that (because of demands of syllabus / time etc. etc.) schools start with gr.12 topics in gr.11 - in order for them to cope in gr.12. To me, personally, it is unfair towards the learners. I understand the demands on teachers / learners are very high - but isn't it time National became aware of that? I really think we should pause - personally, locally, provincially - educate our learners, stop chasing statistics and rather prepare our learners for life ... And with this I'm not trying to say that I am perfect in that - all of us are in the same boat, that is why we are supporting one another - and I am so privilaged to have the support of all of you in Lejweleputswa. We are really a committed group of teachers with learning facilitators that doesn't fail us. XX

The whole reason why q 10 was omitted for the Free State was not to fail and disadvantage our learners. Read the exam guideline then you will see that the question to our opinion was unfair. The decision taken by the Provincial Office was not to chase or manipulating statistics. The issue was discussed with national, but at that stage the paper was written already. If you however feel your learners were now disadvantaged by the decision contact your subject advisor who easily will get permission from Me Nel that you may mark the question.
On your other issues I can't respond.

  4. Thank you. My personal opinion is that schools don't cover that part of the work because they start with gr.12 work in gr.11. It is a personal opinion though - I will discuss it with relevant persons.
