Memo additions: Grade 12 P1 Q3.2

In view of the fact that this is an isolated system, accept additions 1, 2 and 3 below for full marks, because the mass does not influence the required speed.

BUT
  • If 1,59 kg AND 1,6 kg are used in the substitution step, maximum 3/5 if everything else is correct. See example 1.
  • If any other mass is used in the substitution step instead of 1,59 kg and/or 1,6 kg, penalise each error as indicated in the memo.

Memo correction: Grade 11 Q9.3

Originally an errata was sent to schools that the pressure must be 149,58 kPa and NOT 149,58 Pa. The memo does cater for this situation if the message has not reached all teachers.

Unfortunately, the mass of the gas was given as 0,348 g in the Afrikaans paper and 0,384 g in the English paper.

Please use the following to address this error:

If a learner, after doing this, concludes that the gas is not diatomic, just ignore.

Additions/corrections/etc. to June 2015 memoranda

Additions, corrections and other relevant comments will be posted on this blog during the period of marking the June 2015 question papers.

Visit the blog on a regular basis to check if new information is available. The best way of doing this is to subscribe to the blog. You will then be informed by email when new information appears. Refer to this post for instructions on how to subscribe.

If you see something that is not covered by the memoranda, you are welcome to send an email to the blogmaster for inclusion on the blog. It will be highly appreciated and will help other colleagues. Look at the left side of the main page, more or less at the top and just below the space where you enter your own email address to subscribe to the blog; there is a facility to send emails to the blogmaster.

Today the marking of the June examination papers will start. Best luck with all of that.

Key concepts: Accuracy, consistency, fairness!

Very important
As soon as you are finished with a specific grade, email your electronic mark sheet to your subject adviser.

Grade 12 P1 (physics) will take place on 17 June.

Grade 12 P2 (chemistry) will take place on 19 June.

Cluster marking sessions will take place afterwards.

Do you need apparatus and chemicals?

Edutrade gave a lot of support to the Free State Education Department in the past. All the kits that were distributed to schools in 2013 were supplied by Edutrade.

(C) Edutrade

Feel free to contact them at this web address for a complete catalogue, with contact details, if you need apparatus, chemicals, etc. It is important that school management teams budget for this in order to make teaching and learning of physical science more effective. Edutrade can be contacted at 012 665 3933.

Plan ahead and don't run out of apparatus and chemicals!!

Support material for learners/continue

The rest of the support material, mentioned in this post, is available and can be downloaded by using the link that was emailed last week. Teachers must please download this to become part of their personal subject resources. If resources are limited at school, it is not necessary to duplicate every document for learners. It might be more economic to scrutinize the material and duplicate only those parts that learners do not already have in other material.

Mind the Gap material

Mind the Gap material is now available for physical sciences. The material is available on Google Drive. Use the same link that was emailed to teachers for downloading the support material of the Gauteng Department of Education.

Currently two documents are available; one for physics (15 MB) and one for chemistry (25 MB).

Memo discussions: March 2015

Additions and/or corrections to the March 2015 memoranda are available here.

Grade 11 Control Test: Q2.2

A scale drawing is asked, but the memo does not have a scale drawing. It is just an example of what it should look like. Learners must construct a scale drawing and you must assess the correctness of it by measuring angles, lengths, etc. A transparency with the construction or a cardboard stencil is helpful to check whether a construction is done correctly.

Grade 12 Control Test

Q6.3

The first mark is given if the homologous series is correctly identified. If not, zero out of two. So, this mark is given by looking at the right hand side of the IUPAC name.
The second mark is given for everything to the left of what the first mark was given for.

Example for 6.3.1
First mark given for “ol”, because an alcohol was correctly identified.
Second mark for “ethan”.

Example 6.3.2
First mark given for “ane”, becasue an alkane was correctly identified.
Second mark for everything to the left of the “ane”, which is “1,2,4-tribromo-3-ethylpent”.

Q2.3
If the "system method" is used, penalise learners with two marks (we want to discourage them to use this method). The mark allocation is as follows:

Q4.2
Answer is "greater". (The rocket starts from zero at the bottom of the well.)
