Innovation in Education
The E-learning unit of the Free State Department of Education will showcase innovative uses of technology in teaching and learning during open days in the near future. Ensure that you attend one of these. Click here to go the website of E-learning where lots of info is provided, and you can also register there to attend an open day. Event programme: The Motheo link is live. Use it to download the event programme in case others do not work. I guess the other centres' programmes will basically be the same.

Cling wrap! Is it dangerous?
Cling wrap is used on a daily basis in our lives. Did you know about the serious health issues involved when bad chemicals start to migrate from the cling wrap?
One of the Lejweleputswa teachers, Mr Thuntsi Thekiso of Kheleng Secondary School, made me aware of this. Click here to go to the page with interesting articles and from there follow the link to the article itself. Scary indeed!

Olympiad for grade 10: Round 2 on 14 August
14 August is around the corner and the excitement is building up! After round one of the grade 10 Olympiad (read here about it), the four team members of every school were identified and they are busy preparing for the 54 cluster competitions across the Free State in which 310 teams will take part; it is 1240 learners!
Each one of these learners will receive a participation pack that consists of very nice stationery!
Even more exciting is obviously the prizes. In each cluster competition, there will be a first, second and third prize.
Top performers in the cluster competitions will then be invited to take part in the district finals on 11 September! That will be something to work very hard for. Each participant in the district finals will get a Casio pocket calculator and the winners will obviously get prizes as well.
Things just get better and better! Work hard and prepare for the cluster competitions to do as best as possible. The better your team does, the better your changes to proceed to the district competition!

2018 Free State Science Olympiads for Grades 10, 11 and 12
Monday, 23 July 2018, was a great day for physical sciences. It was the kick-off for learners in grades 10, 11 and 12 to write their Science Olympiads.
In grades 11 and 12, apart from schools who have entered their learners by themselves, the Free State Department of Education (FSDE) sponsored 1080 learners from MST schools (Math, Science and Technology) and invited Non-MST schools to take part. The top 50 learners in each of grades 11 and 12 will qualify to attend the Free State Science Convention in Potchefstroom. It will DV be held on 16 and 17 August and it is always a highlight of the year's programme!
In the case of grade 10, at least 50% of all the learners taking physical sciences in all schools of the Free State were sponsored by the FSDE to enter round 1 of the grade 10 Olympiad. The top 4 learners in each school will qualify to take part as a team in round 2 of the Olympiad, the so-called cluster competition. This is scheduled for 14 August.
From there, the top teams in quintile 1 to 3 schools will compete against one another in the district finals (round 3) and the provincial finals (round 4). Likewise, the top teams of quintile 4 and 5 schools will compete against one another in rounds 3 and 4. These competitions are scheduled for 11 September with the provincial finals on 12 & 13 October 2018.
We are very excited about all of this. It enhances participation and interest in physical sciences and the FSDE invests a lot of money in making it possible for our learners to be exposed to these opportunities.
Best luck to all the learners who qualify for upcoming events. For those of them who do not qualify; keep on learning and keep on participating. Life asks from us to make a contribution! The support from all the teachers in these events is also greatly appreciated! Teachers play a major role in the development of the learners.

In memoriam
It was with great sadness to learn of the passing away of two of our physical science colleagues during this term.
Mr M Lenyora was a staff member at Lebogang and
Mr S J Hlapane at Mamellang Thuto.
We will always remember these two men and their potential. Their places are now empty!

Good news from Active Atoms!
What began as an experiment has gradually matured into a support structure for learners taking mathematics and physical sciences.
Kabelo Makheta, with the help of four tutors, founded Active Atoms at the beginning of 2018 with the aim of helping learners to acquire a better understanding of mathematics and physical sciences. Tutorial classes are offered before school, during afternoons and evenings to effectively break down the barriers that prevent learners from understanding the subject content.
Kabelo is mainly based at HTS Welkom, but he and his team also offer tutorials in Thabong. Please contact Kabelo at 079 147 8832 for help!

Memo PhySci Grade 10 June Examination
Here is additional information, clarification, etc. for the marking of the above-mentioned paper.
*** New info ***
Two ticks in brackets mean zero or two marks.
Question 4.2.4
Each underlined part gets one mark.
Question 4.7.1 & 4.7.2
Question 5.4
Question 5.5.3
Question 7.2.4
Question 10.3 & 10.4
*** End of new info ***
Question 6.1.3
Mark as follows: If reagents are correct, first mark. If products are correct, second mark. Now look at balancing; if both coefficients for reagents are correct (whole numbers), third mark. If both coefficients for products are correct, fourth mark. The two marks for balancing are forfeited if either the reagents or the products are incorrect.
Question 8.2.1
The question could be confusing. Award "transverse" and "longitudinal". In other words, if anyone of the two terms is used, the mark is awarded.
Question 10.2 and 10.4
Stay on the memo. No "positive marking" from 10.2 to 10.4.
