Comments: Chemistry paper of 9 November

As you know, we try to help our chief markers and internal moderators with information they can take along to enhance the scope and quality of national memo discussions.

Would you please be so kind to scrutinise the chemistry paper of today, and send any comments you consider necessary for the above-mentioned purpose?

Don’t think your view is not important. Anything that can add value to the marking process and overall situation with question papers, is welcome. Don’t wait too long to send them; we have to have them before the national memo discussions commence and that is usually a few days after a paper is written.

You can post your comments below or you can email them. See email address on the left - almost at the top.

  1. I have gone through paper 2 as per your request, the paper had only stoichiometric calculations that were challenging and they could only make less than 30% of the paper, there were few high order questions but a lot of lower order and middle order questions. The paper was well set and even accommodated the level 1 and 2s more than the first paper. The paper also accommodated the information that the different textbooks and previous question papers have, so most learners revised the previous question papers by referring to their textbooks and exam guideline.

  2. Paper 2 to me was much easier than paper1 ,multiple choice fair, brilliant learners can get total in question1 but it accommodated all learners.Q1.8 is tricky for me.Question 2,3&4 were fair and accommodates all learners, except only Q4.6 which requires application of stoichiometric calculations to calculate actual volume of oxygen reacted first,so if thorough revision was done in organic chemistry learners can pass the paper with only Q1-Q4 because they add up to 62 marks of which is 41% of the paper.

Q5 was fair except Q5.5.1(requires stoichiometry )Q6 was fair, concentrations at equilibrium were given for Kc calculations.
Q7 only Q6.2.2 was challenging but if a September2015 paper was thoroughly revised most learners can still score full marks on it.Q8 was straight forward, all information required to answer the whole question was provided on the table.Q9 only 9.5 might be tricky for some learners(% purity) but in actual fact it is not challenging.Q10 fertilizers was easy, hope learners realized that they must calculate % composition of two atoms of N in (NH4NO3) 1st before they calculate mass of N.
I strongly believe that learners will do well in this paper
In Q3.1.6 I think learners should have been referred back to reaction2 like in the case of Q3.1.2, I think some learners will write structural formula of any alkene."Write down structural formula of the alkene in reaction2"

Thank you and well done. I thought this paper was well balanced there were a few challenging questions but not beyond what the students have been exposed to. The hardworking learners would have been able to do well as the questions were in line with what they had to study. If I really had criticism it would be that there were many calculations. But they were within reason.

  4. Organic chemistry questions were very fair and basic (Q2). Question 3.1.. the flow diagram was not much complex, and I think learners were advantaged with that regard. Question 3.2. The monomer question was much familiar with the 2014 & 2015 trial examination question papers in this section, with the usage of previous question papers, this still justifies the fairness of the question paper.
Question 6.. theoretical analysis was required and all much of questions were reasonable.
